The eyes are more than windows for our souls. They serve as lamps for our body to show us the physical world we have, and therefore, we live, move, and have our being.
With the advent of revolutionized technology of our generation- information technology, software and electronics paved way for the widespread use of screen-based equipment called visual display terminals (VDT), either at work or leisure. And most of the habitual users of VDTs have a common complaint: eye fatigue. They cannot help spending long hours at the computer.
Some of them spend it for work-related activities, which take more hours in their daily routine. While others spend a lot of time engrossed on their screens playing video games, online games, or whatever else which may be related.
Eye strain from computers has symptoms which will definitely affect your work and visual tasks, making you less effective and productive. Simple tips would advise that:
a) ensure that your monitor is at the correct height angle to prevent you from straining your eyes and neck to see the entire screen.
b) Fix your eyes and focus on the center of the screen
c) Make sure your lighting is just right without disrupting your vision while looking at the computer,
d) avoid sitting in front of a window or behind it to avoid glare
Other preventive measures:
1. Take short, frequent breaks away from the monitor. Rest your eyes around 2-3 minutes every 15-20 minutes, 5 minutes every 30 minutes, or 10 minutes every hour.
2. Do eye exercises. A good eye massage daily will help counter eye strain. Massage your eyelids and muscles over your brow, temple and upper cheek. Do it once or twice everyday.
3. Fix your work station as convenient to you, especially the set-up of your computer. Make sure proper lighting is achieved that will control glare and screen reflections.
4. Use proper posture. Proper seating will help you avoid straining from the computer and at the same time, will properly support your back.
5. Blink often because it helps produce tears that moisten and lubricates the eyes.
6. Consult an Eye Care Professional when you are suffering prolonged, consistent symptoms of eye strain due to excessive use of computers. They can recommend a proper prescription and advise you on achieving a work station conducive to your working.
7. Adjust the brightness setting of your screen
8. Adjust your font size, colors, as per your comfort
9. Watch your diet. Eat lots of food with Vitamin A found in carrots, green leafy vegetables colored fruits. These will help you improve your vision and to prevent related eye problems
10. Lastly, perform all of the above. Make sure you get proper care for your eyes.
There are many ways we should take note in caring for our eyes. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. If we have the knowledge now about eye strain, we must use it and not take it for granted. For in the end, it is not just us who suffer but people around us as well.
